Council of Fellows Faculty Excellence in Outreach Award

The Penn State Behrend Council of Fellows established the Excellence in Outreach Award in 2000 to recognize that faculty member who, in the opinion of students, colleagues, and community leaders, most truly embodies the outreach mission of the College, the community, and an academic profession. Outreach in education includes using teaching or demonstration skills in an area of expertise to shape intentionally the potential of individuals or groups outside of the college community. Outreach in service includes service to communities, governments, corporations, professional organizations, learned societies, and other external constituencies. Please refer to this page for a more complete definition of outreach.

Eligibility: Any faculty member who has completed two years or more of continuous full-time teaching and/or research service at Penn State Behrend as of the judging date is eligible. Previous recipients are ineligible for a period of five years. Recent recipients of this award include: Greg Filbeck (2013), Stephen Strom (2014), Courtney Nagle (2015), Gabrielle Dietrich (2016), and Jodie Styers (2017).

Nomination Procedure: Any member of the student body, faculty, staff, administration, or an officially recognized student organization of the College may nominate faculty members for the award. In addition, community and professional leaders may nominate faculty members for the award. These nominations will be sent to the appropriate school directors for consideration.

Nomination Deadline: This award nomination involves a two-step nomination process with two deadlines. Each sponsor must complete and submit this nomination form by the deadline established by the college each year, generally in the second full week of March. Nomination forms will be sent to the appropriate school director for consideration. Each school director will then forward a single nomination for the school to the Chancellor’s Office by the deadline established by the college in early April. Final nominations from school directors must include a completed nomination form, those sections of the nominee’s curriculum vitae pertaining to outreach, and a statement that addresses how the candidate’s work is distinct from typical academic responsibilities in teaching, research, and service; the relationship between the nominee’s outreach, research, teaching, and service; and the impact of the nominee’s outreach on the school.

Award Announcement: The recipient of this award will be announced prior to commencement and will be posted to the Penn State Behrend website.
